A house was badly damaged in a blaze believed to have been caused when batteries caught fire.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to Masterman Road in East Ham at 11.54pm last night (November 21).

Although there were no reports of any injuries, half of the first floor of a mid-terraced house was damaged.

Four adults and a child left the building before the brigade arrived and the fire was under control by 1.04am today (November 22).

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by lithium-ion batteries.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "Lithium-ion batteries are susceptible to failure if incorrect chargers are used, so it's important to always use the correct charger for the product and buy an official one from a reputable seller.

"Batteries can also pose a risk if they have been damaged, so try to ensure they are not getting knocked around while in use as this can increase the chance of damage of cells.

"You should also not expose them to extremes of temperature."

Fire crews from East Ham, Plaistow, Barking and Stratford fire stations attended the scene.
