Newham Council has raked in a staggering £12.7 million in five years from parking fines issued around the London Stadium, the Recorder can reveal.

Thousands of drivers were penalised by penalty charge notices (PCNs) totalling £12,773,256.94 in five residential parking zones (RPZ) - Stratford Central, Stratford North West, Stratford South East, Stratford South West and West Ham - according to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

Single parent Lizzie Jarvis blamed poor signage for the high volume of tickets, including her own, and accused the local authority of “shameless profiteering”.

She said: “I don’t think it’s fair, I do not think it’s clear enough. They know it is going to happen.

“I know others who have also got parking tickets who think ‘What the hell?’ It is a Sunday and it is a single yellow line.”

The five areas form a designated event day parking zone around the former Olympic Stadium, now home to West Ham United.

Lizzie says she had no idea the signs telling her parking restrictions were in place during events were placed at the entrance to each RPZ only.

Newham Council said the type of PCNs issued were not limited to event days.

A spokeswoman said: “The introduction of RPZs in Newham was designed to prioritise parking for residents in their own streets.

“Pressure on parking spaces in the borough has intensified as commuters from outside the borough have sought to use our many transport connections for their journeys into central London.

“All revenue from parking fines and moving traffic violation fines in Newham is reinvested in the borough’s highways.

“In addition the council is currently carrying out a major overhaul of the boroughs roads, pavements and lighting.”
