The parents of a 15-year-old schoolgirl killed in a suspected arson attack are currently in "unimaginable pain", according to the Mayor of Newham.

Tiffany Regis died in a flat fire in Beckton which started at around 5.30pm on Thursday (April 6).

A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and has since been released on bail until a date next month.

Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz said: "Tiffany’s parents are going through unimaginable pain at the loss of their much loved 15-year-old daughter who brought so much joy.

"I am deeply upset by this tragic loss of a young life, as is everyone in Newham.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Tiffany’s parents, family and friends at this very difficult and heart-breaking time.

"I am urging anyone with any information to contact the police incident room.

"Our priority is to support Tiffany’s parents grieving the loss of their child; and all those young people who have lost a dear friend."

A Newham Council spokesperson added on Twitter: "Council officers continue to assist affected residents and our youth workers are in constant contact with young people in Beckton who are understandably upset by what has happened.

"Council officers will continue to work closely with the emergency serevices and the police as they continue with investigations following the arrest of a 16-year-old young man."

Emergency services raced to the flat after reports of a fire at a block of flats in Tollgate Road on Thursday.

A post-mortem examination on Saturday (April 8) found that Tiffany had died of smoke inhalation.

The fire is being treated as arson and an investigation by the Specialist Crime Commmand has been launched.
