A huge estate redevelopment scheme has been endorsed by residents.

The Canning Town Estate regeneration scheme has won the support of 69.9 per cent of residents in the area after a month-long ballot ended last week.

It forms part of Newham Council's Affordable Homes for Newham programme and is the third positive estate regeneration ballot to come out of it, the council said.

The ballot on the £500m scheme saw a 56.6 per cent turn out from eligible voters wishing to have their say on the development.

Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz said: “I am really pleased with the outcome as it shows that local residents trust their council to deliver the things that matter most to them."

Five-hundred of these homes will be targeted at families, featuring three bedrooms or more.

Provisions have also been made in the development plans for community facilities, play spaces, and improved public and green spaces.

The landmark decision follows a two year co-production process with the council and the Canning Town community.

The submission of a masterplan for a formal decision on their approval will now happen later in the year.

Ms Fiaz added: "The result shows we have the overwhelming backing of the community who are ready to see positive change happen in a neighbourhood that has been left behind for too long.

"We will now get cracking with the improvements in the local area and building much needed homes.

"I am looking forward to continuing working closely with residents and bring to life our vision for an enhanced neighbourhood and well designed, high quality homes our people can afford.”

The council said it is already building 147 new 'affordable' homes on the estate as part the Affordable Homes for Newham programme.
