A woman has died after a fatal crash in which the car she was driving caught fire.

The driver, who was in her 30s, crashed near Beckton Park roundabout, in Royal Albert Way, on Thursday (August 15), shortly after police officers stopped her vehicle to carry out a "welfare check".

The Metropolitan Police have said their officers had a "short conversation" with the woman during this attempted welfare check at around 5pm.

She then drove away, and soon after her car was in collision with "road furniture" and caught fire, a spokesperson added.

Emergency services went to the scene and treated the woman but she died before she could be taken to hospital.

The Met Police have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) - the organisation responsible for handling complaints made against police forces - after the incident.

The Met's Directorate of Professional Standards has also been informed, and an enquiry into the circumstances of the collision is ongoing. 

The woman's next of kin have been informed.

The spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: "Enquiries into the circumstances of the collision are ongoing, led by officers from the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command.

"As is routine, the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed and a mandatory referral has been made to the IOPC.

"Any witnesses, or those who have dash cam footage of the incident or moments leading up to it, are asked to call 0208 597 4874 or 101 quoting CAD 5708/15AUG."
