A Stratford man died after being run over just five minutes from his front door, a court has heard.
Heamat Singh Landa, 52, of Keogh Road, was struck by a car in Water Lane on October 18.
But the driver was not arrested and is being treated by police as a cooperating witness.
A Metropolitan Police Service spokesman said: “The investigation is ongoing. The driver is known and remained at the scene. He has not been arrested but is helping us with our enquiries.”
An inquest was opened into Mr Landa’s death at East London Coroner’s Court, Walthamstow, on Thursday, October 31.
“The collision occurred in Water Lane, at the junction of Manbey Park Road,” coroner’s officer Jean Smyth testified.
“Mr Landa was a pedestrian when he was struck by a car. The driver stopped and called emergency services.”
The London Ambulance Service and the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) were scrambled to the scene, but Mr Landa’s life could not be saved.
A post-mortem examination on October 23 gave his cause of death as chest injuries caused by a road traffic collision.
“I’m satisfied on those facts this death occurred in circumstances requiring an inquest,” said coroner Nadia Persaud.
“The inquest will be opened and adjourned for further investigations to take place.”
She declared Mr Landa’s family and the driver of the car interested persons in the inquest.
Interested persons have the right to interrogate evidence and question witnesses at the hearing.
Mrs Persaud asked Mrs Smyth to obtain a statement on behalf of the family.
“If they have any concerns relating to the circumstances of his death, I would like details of those please,” she said.
She also ordered copies of the ambulance service and HEMS records from the incident, a copy of the forensic collision investigator’s report, and the police senior investigator’s summary report.
Mrs Persaud set an inquest date of July 15.
“The inquest has been listed for some time off in light of the time it takes to receive forensic collision investigation reports,” she said.
