Kingsford Community School’s year seven fustal team were crowned Newham’s first-ever futsal champions last week.
The Beckton-based school cruised to victory as they hosted the tournament snd beat off the rest of the borough, including St Bonaventure’s, Royal Docks, East London Science School, Lister and Forest Gate.
They sealed progress into the semi-final of the competition where they picked up a 1-0 victory against Forest Gate school.
In the opposite semi-final St Bonaventure’s drew 0-0 with Royal Docks and it went to penalties.
St Bons won 1-0 in the shoot-out meaning they would progress to the final, but Kingsford proved too strong and came up trumps with a 2-0 win.
Teacher Thomas Quinn said: “Thank you to all the pupils, teachers and Genesis Futsal Club for ensuring the tournament was a success.
“It was a great evening of futsal with some outstanding skill and commitment on display. Hopefully this will ignite a passion for some of the pupils to go and play futsal inside and outside of school which will help develop their performances in the more familiar format.”
Kingsford’s Nicholas Baginski was named player of the tournament after scoring both goals in the final.
And Quinn gave extra praise to Luca Gondim, who was a presence playing with tenacity in his performance and quality on the ball going forward, George Howett and Blake Davis who controlled and dictated play and Christian Okungbowa for pulling off some fantastic saves.
The year eight event takes place this week.
